Mordred was our book store cat. He died in 2021. At 13 years old, he developed diabetes and neuropathy in his back legs. He was having trouble getting around in the store, so we took him upstairs to live with us. He lived a life of leisure as all good bookstore cats should do. He was one of two black cats that we adopted from the Central Kansas Veterinary Center in South Hutchinson. His litter mate was named Merlin. Both names come from the story of King Arthur. Everyone knows who Merlin was, but Mordred was not such a famous character. He is known as a notorious traitor who fought King Arthur at the Battle of Camlann, where he was killed. Different versions of the story have been told about his parents. He is best known as Arthur's illegitimate son by his half-sister Morgause. In other versions, he is Morgause's son with her husband King Lot of Orkney. He is always thought of as the villain in the story. - Wikipedia
Our Mordred was far from a villain. He was a sweet, gentle cat who loved to be petted. He thought the store existed for people to come in and visit with him.
Our new bookstore cat is named Tabitha Twitchet from the tales of Beatrix Potter. She is only 2 years old (2020) and also came from the Central Kansas Veterinary Center in South Hutchinson. She is very playful and energetic. She is a long haired tortoise-shell. I think the word "princess" suits her well. She is very talkative, and likes to be petted and carried on your shoulder, but lets you know when she's had enough.
